| Electromechanical Power SteeringThe electromechanical power steering is a speed-sensitive electrical power-assisted steering system which is only activated when needed and does without any hydraulic components. Compared to hydraulic power steering, vehicles fitted with electromechanical power steering benefit from lower fuel consumption and new convenience and safety functions: active return of the steering to its centre point improves the steering sensation around the mid-point, while crosswind compensation comes to the driver's aid when driving in a constant crosswind or on a road surface which slopes to one side. Customised adaptation of the power assistance to take account of the engine and equipment fitted in a vehicle promises unrivalled steering characteristics. The inclusion of these additional functions has been made possible by integrating the control unit into the CAN data bus. Volkswagen fits the electromechanical power steering as standard in Golf and Touran models, for example. |
